Bergbahnen Dachstein Krippenstein, the mountain cable car in Obertraun near Hallstatt, is a favoured spot for international tourists, particularly during summer. To efficiently manage the busy parking lot with a fully digital solution, the cable car operator chose Arivo‘s ticketless, barrier-free parking system.

Nestled in the heart of Austria's Salzkammergut, just a short drive from Hallstatt, you'll find the base station of Bergbahnen Dachstein Krippenstein in Obertraun. As one of four locations operated by Bergbahnen Dachstein Salzkammergut, it stands out as one of the region's top destinations for hiking, mountaineering, and winter sports. The Bergbahnen Dachstein Krippenstein attract countless visitors, drawn by its stunning landscapes and outdoor adventure opportunities.

As a result, the adjacent parking lot, with its 420 spaces, is consistently busy. During the summer, up to 2,500 day and multi-day visitors use the parking facilities daily, including many international tourists from Asia and the Middle East, who appreciate the proximity to Hallstatt.

Implementing Paid Parking to Reduce Unauthorized Use

At the beginning of 2024, the cable car operator decided to implement paid parking for two main reasons:

  1. Ensuring available parking for guests:
Due to its proximity to Hallstatt, has been fee-based for some time, the car park was often used and occupied by buses and campers as a cheap alternative.
  1. Maintaining infrastructure:
The second reason was of an economic nature in order to be able to maintain the existing infrastructure and parking facilities in good condition.

A Digital Parking System for Minimal Operational Effort

The choice landed on Arivo's digital parking system, which meets all the necessary requirements. Unlike traditional ticketing systems, it significantly reduces the need for manual effort. The system is user-friendly for both visitors and employees, and it also caters to specific needs, such as the easy allocation of parking and access permissions for property owners, persons with a right of use, suppliers, and staff.

Without tickets, barriers, or cash, Arivo's system now enables a customer-friendly and efficient parking management solution. From the very first discussions, Arivo's motivated team impressed the cable car operators with their expertise, giving them confidence that they had found the perfect partner for the project.

The parking area has been equipped with license plate cameras at all entry and exit points, as well as red-green traffic lights. Parking fees can be paid cashless either at the two payment kiosks or online via QR code, up to 48 hours after exiting. To minimize unauthorized overnight parking and offer favourable rates to cable car guests, the daytime rate has been set significantly lower than the nighttime rate. Group travel buses park for free.

Successful Implementation with Arivo & positive User Feedback

Since its launch in May 2024, the Arivo system has operated reliably, much to the satisfaction of Bergbahnen Dachstein Krippenstein. Employees appreciate the intuitive management interface and the system’s reliability, even during peak times. Guests have also responded well to the system. The user-friendly design, particularly the large touchscreens at the payment kiosks and the red-green traffic lights at exits, combined with clear signage, contribute significantly to the positive user experience.

From the very first discussions, Arivo's motivated team impressed us with their expertise, giving us the confidence that we had found the ideal partner for the implementation. Arivo's parking system is incredibly user-friendly and saves us a lot of manual effort in operation. Even though parking management has become an additional responsibility for us, we haven't needed to hire any extra staff to handle it."
